PVR makes more money through F&B than Burger King!

PVR vs Burger King

Surprised? So am I when I see PVR’s overpriced popcorn rates lol.

With over Rs. 1500 cr revenue last year just from food and beverage sales, PVR has become one of the top 5 fast food chains in India.

For context, McDonalds in North and West, clocked about Rs 2,000 crore annual revenue.

With a slowing down of ticket sales during and post COVID, cinema chains have turned to advertisement and F&B sales as major revenue contributors.

This also points to the importance of cross selling and generating multiple sources of revenue.

Here’s what has worked for PVR to turn into a F&B giant:

1) Bought a 70% stake in 4700BC popcorn. A very popular gourmet popcorn brand.
2) Listed on Swiggy/Zomato as a restaurant and taking orders.
3) Customer’s F&B spends are growing at twice the rate of ticket prices.
4) Multiple options to choose from. PVR Gold to Sushi bhi deta hai!

If things keep growing this way, PVR might even beat giants like McD & KFC at their own game. What a flex that would be!

Fun fact: The intermission/interval in the middle of a film is largely an INDIAN concept. You wouldn’t find an intermission in American theatres! Maybe this is why PVR is creating such a dent in the F&B business.
