Think Clean! For a cleaner world

The laundry house cleaner program

Kunal Shah cites the laundry business as he explains failures in the Delta 4 model. But what if I told you that a huge business can be built there?

We moved from Dhobi Ghats to Automatic Washing Machines. This was a tech improvement.

The next revolution lies in customer experience. From ‘laundry’ to ‘garment care’.

Think American Car Washes.

Anyone could’ve washed their own car at home, but the Car Washes delivered an EXPERIENCE.

If laundry businesses do the same, there is a huge opportunity at hand.

Let’s look at a few trends and numbers to understand why it’s ripe for disruption ->

1) 36+ million affluent and elite households in India. They do 30% of the total consumption.

2) Upward trend in luxury spendings – SUVs, iPhones, outbound tourism etc.

3) 230+ million customers in Tier 1 and 2 cities, are spending $100 on laundry annually.That’s an annual revenue opportunity of $23 Billion!

Looking at the above makes me extremely bullish about the sector.

After all, it’s about Roti Kapda and Makaan and startups need to disrupt all three.

Roti -> Zomato, Swiggy
Kapda -> ???
Makaan -> NoBroker, Housing

I came across ‘The Laundry House’ recently and I am positive that they will fill the ‘KAPDA’ gap which is waiting for disruption.

Now the laundry business is actually a startup graveyard, in 2013-14 multiple startups got funded, tried and failed to crack the market.

After around a few years of no noise, the market has again woken up and new business models like ‘The Laundry House’ have awakened investor interest yet again.

I have to ‘come clean’ here, I’m rarely floored by the business model of a client. They’ve managed to accurately cater to a problem, all while maintaining great margins.

It was a pleasure working with Arif Unia and Dheeraj Bhardwaj! I am sure their company will tame the ‘laundry’ beast.
